Purchasing auto insurance at the border
At either side of the border you will find businesses selling car insurance for Mexico. It might be cheaper to purchase the insurance on the US side before traveling into Mexico, although you can also buy this auto insurance coverage in most Mexican border cities and towns.
Short-term Mexican auto insurance is also available from numerous agencies and travel services on the Texas side of the border. Be sure to purchase Mexican auto insurance prior to going south of the border (US insurance is not valid in Mexico).
Rental Car
Yes, sometimes rental car insurance comes with your credit card, but this doesn't work the same way in Mexico. The standard insurance included with many car rental contracts in Mexico provides only nominal liability coverage, often as little as the equivalent of $200. Ask you rental car provider, but the included auto insurance is usually not valid in Mexico, so be sure to secure additional Mexican insurance through your car rental provider.
